Prompt Troubleshooting

Why Your AI Prompts Fail (And How to Fix Them)

Weak prompts usually fail for predictable reasons. If your output feels generic, off-target, or inconsistent, the problem is often the instructions, not the model.

Why prompts fail

AI prompts fail when the model has to guess your goal, your audience, or the format you want. The less direction you give, the more generic the answer becomes.

Most prompt failures come from the same three issues: vague input, missing constraints, and lack of structure.

The vague input problem

If you ask for something broad like "make this better," the model has no reliable definition of success. Replace vague words with a specific task, audience, and outcome.

Missing constraints

Constraints improve output by narrowing the answer. Length limits, tone requirements, required sections, and exclusions all reduce ambiguity and improve consistency.

Lack of structure

Structured prompts make structured output. Ask for bullet points, numbered steps, tables, JSON, or named sections when you want a result that is easier to review and reuse.

Before and after prompt examples

Before: Vague input problem

Make this better.

After: stronger prompt

Rewrite this landing page headline for a B2B SaaS product. Make it clearer, more specific, and focused on reducing manual reporting time for operations teams.

Before: Missing constraints

Write a product launch email.

After: stronger prompt

Write a product launch email for existing users. Keep it under 180 words, highlight three new features, and end with a single call to action to book a demo.

Before: Lack of structure

Analyze this meeting.

After: stronger prompt

Analyze these meeting notes and return three sections: summary, blockers, and action items. Use bullet points and assign owners where possible.

Fix your prompt before you reuse it

If you have a rough prompt already, run it through the cleaner, tighten the instructions, and test the improved version.
